Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Description

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a commonly under-recognized condition. It typically involves the inattentive syndrome, which is marked by symptoms such as task avoidance, missed details, struggle with follow-through, and difficulty sustaining mental effort. The hyperactive/impulsive syndrome may also be present, and this includes symptoms such as restlessness, impatience, difficulty relaxing, and constantly feeling “on the go.”

At Via Clinic, we use a carefully honed process when assessing for ADHD. Evaluations for ADHD consist of three parts.

  • First, we perform a thorough mental health evaluation and take a careful history. This involves evaluating symptoms of inattention, while also exploring other related symptoms.
  • Next, we send a self-assessment tool, to be completed at home. This tool consists of multiple validated measures and assessments, and it is designed to compliment the evaluation.
  • Lastly, a follow-up appointment is scheduled, where the results and a treatment plan are discussed.  Components of a treatment plan may include both medical and behavioral approaches, such as medication, accommodations, and executive function coaching. Importantly, we believe in safe and conservative prescribing practices, which appropriately balance risks and benefits.

The goal of our approach is two-fold. First, ADHD diagnoses deserve thorough assessment. Our patients can feel confident in the accuracy and level of detail provided in our evaluations. Second, we recognize that neuropsychological testing – a commonly recommended form of assessment – can be lengthy and expensive, typically costing thousands of dollars. We wish to make the evaluation process more streamlined and accessible.

Success is not final, failure is not fatal It is the courage to continue that counts.
